Emmanuel William Nyuon was born impoverished in war-torn South Sudan (now the country of South Sudan), Africa. Always a prolific writer and superb student, his academic prowess prompted his father, the late South Sudanese war hero Commander William Nyuon Bany, to exempt his son from front-line military service and instead encourage the pursuit of higher education.

After his father’s untimely passing in 1996, Emmanuel’s life spiraled out of control. He ran the streets from state to state and became entangled in a life of crime, hustling and selling drugs. Eventually, he was convicted on federal charges and sentenced to decades in prison after refusing to cooperate with authorities. Behind bars, he endured gang wars, long stints in solitary confinement, and the daily battles of survival.

Determined not to let his circumstances define him, Emmanuel chose to turn his life around channeling his energy into writing. He began creating powerful works inspired by pain, hope, inclusion, diversity, redemption, perseverance, resilience, and his immersion in cultures spanning South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and the U.S.A.

Today, Emmanuel lectures in African Studies and teaches Arabic and Swahili. He is on a spiritual journey in pursuit of enlightenment and continues to welcome feedback and constructive criticism.
